OUT NOW: “Red World”

Posted in Bizarro Books, Bizarro Events, Bizarro Fiction, Carlton Mellick III on April 30, 2012 by carltonmellick

My novelette “Red World” has just been released by White belly Press. It is a 30 page trade paperback with a very limited run of 100 copies. If you want a copy I suggest you get it right away.

This story tells the tale of a recovering junky trying to save his 8-year-old brother from a life of prostitution in a surreal version of New York City — a place where street kids mutate into fish-like creatures, the homeless stilt-walk through oceans of insects, and the only colors left visible to the human eye are shades of red.

For those of you who like darker urban bizarro tales similar to my novellas Egg Man or Crab Town, this is a story I recommend.

BizarroCon Reports

Posted in Bizarro Books, Bizarro Events, Bizarro Fiction, Carlton Mellick III, Uncategorized on November 30, 2011 by carltonmellick

BizarroCon was about a week or so ago and I’m still riding the high caused by this awesome event. For those of you who don’t know, BizarroCon is an annual four day meetup of about 80 writers and artists involved in the Bizarro Fiction genre. We get together at Edgefield Manor outside of Portland, OR, which is also a brewery, winery, distillery. It’s four days full of parties, workshops, crazy performances, readings, networking, brainstorming, and planning the future of the bizarro fiction genre. If you’re a writer of bizarro fiction, it’s something you should be going to every single year.

I didn’t write a con report for this year’s bizarrocon, but I recommend checking out these con reports from other attendees:

Sponsor a Bizarro Writer!

Posted in Bizarro Authors, Bizarro Events on February 25, 2010 by carltonmellick

Cameron Pierce is looking for people to sponsor him for his writing marathon next week. Donate money and get some free stuff, including copies of the book he plans to write during his marathon!

From Cameron’s website:

Next week, I will be going to the Sylvia Beach Hotel in Newport, Oregon with Mykle Hansen and Carlton Mellick III for a three day writing marathon. I’ll be completing my next book, The Pickled Apocalypse of Pancake Island. I am currently seeking sponsors for this writing marathon. If you would like to contribute, here’s how the sponsorship levels break down:

$5 – Receive an original illustration of an Ass Goblin battling a flying shark.

$10 – Receive a signed advance copy of The Pickled Apocalypse of Pancake Island

$20 – Receive the limited “Pickled Edition” of The Pickled Apocalypse of Pancake Island (yes, this will really be a pickled book).

In addition, all sponsors will be listed on the dedication page of The Pickled Apocalypse of Pancake Island.

You can send any donations through Paypal to If you don’t have Paypal but would like to contribute, just shoot me a message.

For years, I’ve dreamed of going out to Sylvia Beach Hotel in Newport, Oregon for a three day writing retreat. It sounds like the most fantastic place. Every room is themed after a different author, from Edgar Allan Poe to Dr. Seuss, Gertrude Stein to Ernest Hemingway. This is the first opportunity I’ve ever had to go there, and it’s the last opportunity I’ll have for a few years.

Thank you, and please spread the word!

Christopher Moore and Me

Posted in Bizarro Authors, Bizarro Events on December 2, 2009 by carltonmellick

Earlier this year I got the chance to meet Christopher Moore for the first time. It was at the Locus Awards in Seattle. He was the host of the awards. I’ve been a big fan of his work for a long time, so I was in fan boy mode while I was there. So, like a fan boy, during the signing session before the awards I went up to him to sign a copy of Fool. But what threw me off was that he recognized me.

He said something like, “Carlton Mellick III? I’ve been excited to meet you all weekend!” A dumbfounded look crossed my face and he said. “Man, you have the craziest book titles! … And the kinkiest fans!”

We talked for a while and I soon realized he is one of the coolest, nicest, most down to earth writers I’ve ever met. And I’ve met a ton of them.

Recently an author friend told me that I should quote what Christopher Moore said to me and use it as a blurb. I wasn’t sure if that’s okay to do, since it was done verbally and wasn’t in writing. But people have said “No, you totally should!”

So I think I might have to, because it is a pretty awesome blurb:

“Carlton Mellick III has the craziest book titles… and the kinkiest fans!” – Christopher Moore

I especially like it because it praises my readers more than my work. That’s a pretty rare thing. So there it is. I’m positing it on my website right now. Though I’ll be using the blurb online, I probably won’t use it elsewhere unless I get explicit permission. Maybe I’ll contact him about it soon.

I might have to also blog about my experience with Chuck Palahniuk at some point. He was one my instructors at the Clarion workshop, so I basically lived with him for a week. There’s a lot of stories from that. A great guy. Conversations with him are endlessly interesting, because he has so many weird stories and anecdotes.

Writing Marathon at Voodoo Doughnuts

Posted in Bizarro Authors, Bizarro Events on November 20, 2009 by carltonmellick

Portland is known for its weird writers. It is also known for its weird doughnuts. For the next three days, these two things will collide…

PORTLAND, OR (November 18, 2009) This Friday, November 20th, Bizarro author Cameron Pierce will move into Voodoo Doughnut Too (1501 N.E. Davis) for three days to write Die You Doughnut Bastards! The first novella in a trilogy of food stories, Die You Doughnut Bastards! is a bizarro comedy set in a futuristic Portland where sentient Viking doughnuts overthrow human society. It will feature cameos from several doughnuts sold at Voodoo.

One month after celebrating the release of his second book, The Ass Goblins of Auschwitz (Eraserhead Press, 2009), and completing his performance series Meat Magick, Pierce is diving into his most absurd and ambitious project yet.

From Friday, November 20th through Sunday, November 22nd, Pierce will be living and writing in Voodoo Doughnut Too (except when they close between 3am and 6am, then he’ll freeze). He’ll eat nothing but doughnuts during this marathon, so drop in and share a Grape Ape and coffee with him, or just sit back and witness insanity in action.
